Description
This job should be fairly easy for those with API experience.
The goal of this project is to create an API hooking mechanism for me to interface to with my own software application. The API commands being hooked include primarily registry functions.
I will write my own "application manager" which will communicate with your creation ("APIhooker").
My application manager will identify to your APIhooker exactly what processes ("targets") should have API calls hooked. My application manager may then launch the target process. Your APIhooker will then hook the appropriate API calls coming from the target. Your APIhooker will create and maintain an individual registry for each target. If the call is a write, your APIhooker will write to your virtual registry. If it is a read, it will read from your virtual registry. My application manager will need access to the individual virtual registries so as to perform initialization. The virtual registry will be contained within my own virtual file system.
Example:
The target requires an older .dll; the system has several applications which require the newer .dll
My application will manage a virtual file system "VFS" and will install all necessary .dll files into that VFS. My application manager will initialize the target's virtual registry to point at the older .dll files.
Therefore, when the target requires the .dll, it will access the registry and be directed to the proper, older, .dll and any writes from the target should be redirected to the virtual registry as well.
My application manager will monitor for target closure and notify APIhooker to terminate hooking for that particular target.
