Description
The software to be designed is part of a software representation of a service process for electronic handheld devices. Such a device will be connected to a reader, and subsequently, depending on the data readout, be subject to a test procedure.
The key functions are:
- get the serial number (S/N) and complete device status from the device under test (DUT)
- retrieve additional information from local service database for this S/N (if available)
- analyze DUT status and error log
- define test process according to results of analysis
- write logging data (timestamp, S/N), DUT status, analysis results and proposed test - process back into local service database
- show simple graphical process diagrams indicating structure and status of the process
The main software components used are an application server (Tomcat), a database engine (Postgres), drivers for external hardware like interfaces to the DUT and the test equipment itself, and a standard Web browser (Mozilla Firefox) as the user interface. The key functions listed above are to be implemented as JSP.
The task covers the development of a formal specification using UML and Entity Relationship Diagrams, the set-up of the server environment and the coding of the Java Server Pages, including database access. Hardware-dependent driver software will be provided in C++ source format.
The alfa module as covered by this project serves mainly for demonstration purposes. Hence the focus is on architecture, database design and extensibility. The number of alternatives in major program branches is limited to two to three in order to keep the coding effort low. However, the design shall be such that it can be adopted, extended and used in a more complex production environment later on.
Including specification, implementation and test a time frame of two to three weeks is assumed.
