"Reduction of deceleration pulse in a frontal crash scenario"
ASSIGNMENT AIMS:
1)To introduce the application of a commercial FE package to an industrial problem.
2) To introduce a structural frontal crash analysis method.
2)To have an appreciation of methods for understanding acceleration pulse from crash/simulation test results and be able to determine which components have an effect on such pulse
3)To appreciate methods for reducing the structural deceleration by avoiding sudden collapse of structural components
4)This coursework needs to be carried out by a group of TWO students
MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSED:
(1) be able to use an explicit finite element code (such as LS-Dyna) to analyse the crashworthiness of automotive front end structure
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
A CD of your optimized model.
A report which includes the following:
1) Discussion of why progressive collapse of an automotive component is important for a frontal crash.
2) A table showing modifications to relevant panels to reduce the sudden drop in deceleration at the rear of the central tunnel as shown in the attached figure. Target deceleration reduction of 5 g.
3) Having optimised the model in (2), attempt to limit the deformation between nodes 48345 and 48424 to below 50 mm and assess the effect of this constraint at the same location.
