Description
We need a DMX512 Lighting Protocol software library, to exchange DMX512 frames out a modified RS485 serial port. The final project will be either a C library, or a Perl module with the required functionality. The preferred language is Perl, but a C version will be accepted instead if no (good) bids are made for a Perl one. The functions and further details are described below:
DMX512 is a lighting control protocol - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMX_512
The software will be run on a FreeBSD machine - so the final code must also run on FreeBSD. The device is supported as a serial port on FreeBSD. The device is a DMX King USB to DMX512 device based on the Entec USB Pro. The protocol is identical and the documentation regarding the binary protocol can be found at http://www.enttec.com/docs/dmx_usb_pro_api_spec.pdf
We need the library to initialize with a set number of devices (0-512), these devices will have a single binary value between 0-255, and will be stored as an array. The set number of devices will be the upper-bound limit of an array and will be a constant in the library itself.
The library will have a function to open a connection to a serial port, where it will communicate with for all of the write functions. The default device on FreeBSD is /dev/cuau0
The library will have a single 'dmx_write' function, to alter the DMX frame which the device is transmitting (per the API documentation noted above, this is device function 6). This function will take in two integer values - the first being the device address (slot in the aforementioned array, 0-512), the second being the value to assign to that device/slot (0-255). The function will then formulate the correct string of bytes in the correct binary format per the API documentation noted above and send it out the initialized serial port - the function should return true/false based on success, and therefore always return false if the serial port has not yet been initialized.
Finally, the library will have a cleanup function which will disconnect the serial port and release any allocated memory.
The final package should include the single library source file, and the sourcecode should also include clear documentation and comments regarding the arguments used. All Perl code must be written with use strict, and warnings turned on and the final version should run with no errors or warnings outputted.
