Description
Overview -------- Reach (Real-time Engineers' Appointment and Callout Handling) is an existing Pocket PC Smart Client application for use by service engineers servicing / repairing equipment on remote customer sites. The program has been in use for over a year and has now reached the stage where it needs minor changes and bugfixes.
Once the initial work described here has been completed satisfactorily we expect that there will be intermittent ongoing development work over the next year or two.
Platform -------- The PDA software is written in C# using .Net2005 CF, with a SQL Mobile database, and is used on PDAs running Windows Mobile 2003SE or WM5 devices, typically those from HTC. It is not intended for use on smartphones.
Current Software Description ----------------------------
The PDA communicates using a normal SOAP web service client, via GPRS mobile phone network, with a SOAP web service (which is written and maintained by us). Behind the web service is our main application which amongst other things runs a diary/scheduling function for controlling the work being done by engineers.
Messages sent to the PDA are mainly details of jobs to be done, but also include other packages such as ‘alert’ messages and lookup table updates.
Messages sent from the PDA include details of jobs completed, requests for further work, status information; ‘on the way to the job’, ‘arrived at the job’ and so on. In addition the software has an interface to TomTom Navigator routing software.
The application handles ‘occasionally connected’ scenarios, that is, having the ability to continue operating using locally held data when no network connection is available, and seamlessly reconnect and catch up when the connection is again available.
Work to be Done ---------------
a) Program Enhancements
There are minor program enhancements to be made:
- increasing the maximum number of characters displayed text in a checklist (obtained from the webservice) from 20 to 100. - add a checkbox (the database already has a field for it). - possibly 1 or 2 more at this level of complexity
- TomTom Navigator interface. At present the program interfaces to TomTom Navigator versions 4 and 5 via the Tomtom SDK, to obtain position information which is then passed back to the web service. TomTom 6 has just been released and the program needs amending as necessary to interface with that as well. We will supply a copy of the SDK.
b) Bug Fixes
There are around 5 bugs that need fixing – some of which are related. Most are minor but the main one, which will require some diagnostic / testing time to be spent, involves the occasional ‘apparent’ loss of data in some conditions, mainly when a download is interrupted by, say, a phone call on the PDA. The web service believes the data has been received OK, but it is lost on the PDA. There is also an issue with updates to the information on the PDA sometimes not being displayed correctly.
Note: the coder must have a suitable PDA for testing purposes as we believe that these bugs do not appear in the VS2005 emulator environment.
Background Information ----------------------
We (ACA Systems) are ourselves a software developer, but we don’t normally program on PDAs and prefer to subcontract work on this platform.
Before commencing work on the project the coder will be required to complete a simple Non-disclosure agreement.
We are looking to partner here with a company or an individual with proven previous experience in c# + PDAs - please don't respond if you don't have this. Capability and ability to meet deadlines is more important to us than cost.
If you have any questions prior to quoting please don't hesitate to ask.
Deliverables ------------ 1) Complete and fully-functional working program(s) in executable form as well as complete properly commented source code of all work done. 2) Deliverables must be in ready-to-run condition comprising a software installation package that will install the software in ready-to-run condition on the platform(s) specified in this bid request. 3) All deliverables will be considered "work made for hire" under U.S. Copyright law. Buyer will receive exclusive and complete copyrights to all work purchased. (No GPL, GNU, 3rd party components, etc. unless all copyright ramifications are explained AND AGREED TO by the buyer).
Payment ------- We will use the payment escrow facility
Reminder
You may not start working in this and any project before
your bid is accepted. Any user who violates this policy
may have their account permanently suspended.
