Description
Modern Automotive Engine Control Units (ECU) uses a microprocessor which can process the inputs from the engine sensors in real time. This is also referred to as an (electronic)
Engine Management System (EMS).
An engine control module (ECM) is a type of electronic control unit that determines the amount of fuel, ignition timing and other parameters an internal combustion engine needs to
keep running.
1. With the aid of a block diagram Showing the key inputs and outputs (Sensors and actuators) of an automotive petrol engine ECM, explain how ignition timing, engine idle speed and fuel injection are controlled by the ECM.
2. List the type of sensors and associated signal conditioning required by the ECM in measuring the physical inputs needed for its operation
3. Explain the reason for the selection of each type of sensor in the above system, and the key sensor characteristics considered when selecting each sensor.
4. With the aid of diagrams, charts and graphs as appropriate describe how each sensor and its associated signal conditioning circuit work in providing the required input for
the operation of above ECM.
