Description
We are looking to develop an advanced file-replication system using a client-server design. It is intended to run on a local network, using the .NET framework, in a Windows-based environment. It comes in 3 parts - Client, Server, Utility. A brief summary of each component's tasks is below. A detailed feature list will be provided upon project start.
The Client is responsible for listening for update notices from the server over socket, and transferring any new/updated files via socket or BITS. (Cannot use windows file sharing) It should also be able to actively request updates for a specific file set from the server. The client is also responsible for making registry changes, and destroying/creating symlinks (Vista only). It should be designed as a Windows Service to run under both XP and Vista (potentially Windows 7 as well), installable via commandline (silent), and be able to be given input while running via commandline.
The Server will run as a windows service under XP, Vista, 2K3, or 2K8. The server will handle all requests from clients (between 1-500 clients) for version checking, MD5 or CRC file hash comparisons, client status changes, and other tasks. Files are divided into sets, which include both files and registry entries, which are configurable by the end-user via Utility. File sets point to a directory on the server, and can have filters applied to include/exclude files. It can also include/exclude individual clients by IP or Windows Machine Name, or designate time-based windows for file transfer. The server can also retrieve file-set data from a remote web service via XML and store locally. Server stores it's file-set and other data on a local mySQL server.
The Utility is a small program that can be run from anywhere on the local network, and will be used to monitor the current activity of the server and it's clients. It can also be used to modify the configuration of the server. Ideally no interaction with the server EXE itself is needed except to install/run it. All configuration should be able to be done via the Utility, except where this is unfeasible.

We will require the source code after the project is completed.
The client/server will need to transfer files in excess of 3Gb, and be able to handle abnormal termination of the clients on a regular basis. Ideally the client could resume transfer from the middle of a large file.
